Infrared cameras are able to detect differences in temperature between various materials. As the ambient temperature drops on a clear evening, the dry insulation cools rapidly due to radiant cooling, and the hot wet insulation holds its heat. The infrared camera can detect this difference and pinpoint the areas of wet insulation with surgical precision. Or perhaps track down that nagging leak that no one else can find.
